Happy birthday to all our September Babies. The birthstone for September is Sapphire. This beautiful gemstone has been cherished for thousands of years and has a long history associated with Royalty. The ancient Greeks and Romans also believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from harm and envy. The word Sapphire is derived from the Greek word meaning Blue.

Sapphires are part of the big 3 of jewellery gemstones – the other two are Ruby and Emerald. Sapphires are a relatively hard stone with a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Sapphire’s durability makes them a good choice for Jewellery and Rings you choose to wear every day.

Sapphire is famous for its beautiful rich blue colour, but it does come in a variety of colours including Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green and even White. Red sapphires are better known as Ruby. Sapphires and Rubies are both varieties of the mineral corundum.

Sapphires are said to symbolise nobility, truth and romance. It has also been said that a piece of Sapphire jewellery would protect you against envy and the evil eye.

The most famous sapphire from modern times is the engagement ring that was given to Princess Diana and is now worn by Princess Catherine, this beautiful ring features a beautiful 12 carat oval blue Sapphire surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

Are you lucky enough to be born in the month of September? Which colour Sapphire would you choose?
